As the city of Mena, Arkansas, positions itself at the forefront of outdoor recreation with the highly anticipated “Trails at Mena” project, an exciting opportunity has emerged for ULI members and other qualified industry professionals to be part of something truly historic. Mena has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to develop a comprehensive plan for the revitalization of its 44.6-acre City Center—a plan that will anchor the city’s transformation and future growth.
With its prime location at the base of Rich Mountain and direct access to what will be one of the most significant mountain biking parks in the central United States and the only ski-lift-assisted bike bark in the South, Mena is perfectly positioned to leverage the rise of outdoor tourism. As ULI professionals know, the importance of strategic urban planning in small communities cannot be understated. This project isn’t just about revitalizing Mena’s downtown—it’s about creating a vibrant gateway for outdoor enthusiasts while preserving the unique character of the town.
For those familiar with the rapid growth of the bicycle culture in Northwest Arkansas, this opportunity in Mena aligns perfectly. Much like the successes we’ve seen in Bentonville and the surrounding region, Mena’s initiative has the potential to spark a tourism boom, drawing visitors from around the country to experience both the scenic beauty and the downtown charm that small Arkansas cities are known for. ULI members with expertise in placemaking, infrastructure development, and urban planning are uniquely qualified to help Mena craft a thoughtful, implementable vision that sets the stage for long-term success.
The Time Is Now
The Trails at Mena project is already making waves, with plans for 100 miles of trails, including 30 gravity-specific downhill runs that rival even the best in the Rockies. This RFQ offers ULI members and other qualified industry professionals the chance to be a part of the core planning effort that will not only elevate Mena’s downtown but also set a new standard for how small cities can capitalize on their natural assets.
